Lagoon Lifesaver

SUMMER 2002 SPECIAL EDITION

Marin County Open Space District and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have published the Draft EIS/EIR and Feasibility Study Report for the Bolinas Lagoon Ecosystem Restoration. Copies are available at the Bolinas, Stinson Beach and Marin County Civic Center Libraries, and the Seadrift office. The document is also available on a CD-ROM, which can be ordered from the Marin County Community Development Agency at (415) 499-6269, and on-line at the Corps of Engineers web site (http://www.spn.usace.army.mil/projects/bolinas.html).

The public review process includes a joint hearing before the Marin County Planning Commission and the Marin County Parks, Open Space and Cultural Commission, scheduled for Wednesday, July 24.

The agenda time for our project will be available on July 19 by calling (415) 499-6269. Interested parties are encouraged to attend.

The review process also invites written public comments. Please write a letter supporting the Bolinas Lagoon Ecosystem Restoration, and encouraging Marin County to continue to pursue the project vigorously.

Letters should be sent to the attention of Tim Haddad, Environmental Coordinator, Marin County Community Development Agency, 3501 Civic Center Drive, Room 308, San Rafael, CA 94903-4157. Letters must be received at the County by August 5 at 4:00 PM.

Your letter can be as simple as:

Dear Mr. Haddad, I (We) support the restoration of Bolinas Lagoon. Please take the steps necessary for Marin County Open Space District and the Army Corps of Engineers to proceed vigorously and aggressively with the restoration program. Thank you.

Signed,

After the public review period, The County and the Corps will select the option(s) to implement in the first step of construction, finalize the "draft" documents, and forward them to Corps Headquarters for approval and submission to Congress. If all goes according to plan, the project will be authorized in this year’s Water Resources Development Act.
